Giving as an Act of Worship: What the Bible Teaches

On the home page of Victory Bible Church International – North America, one sentence stands out: “Giving is an action of worship, affection & love for Jesus.” It is a helpful way to think about a subject that can make people uncomfortable. Money is personal, and many people have seen giving handled badly. Yet the Bible talks about generosity often, and it presents giving not as a fee or a transaction but as an expression of love and trust toward God.

This article looks at what Scripture teaches about giving, including tithes and offerings, the attitudes God values, and practical ways to make generosity part of your worship.

Why Giving Is Worship

It acknowledges that God is the owner

“The earth is the LORD’s, and the fulness thereof” (Psalm 24:1). When David and the people gave generously for the temple, David prayed, “all things come of thee, and of thine own have we given thee” (1 Chronicles 29:14). Giving is a way of saying, “Lord, everything I have is Yours.”

It responds to God’s generosity

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son” (John 3:16). Christian giving is a response to the greatest gift ever given. Paul called Jesus God’s “unspeakable gift” (2 Corinthians 9:15), and he urged the Corinthians to give in light of Christ’s grace (2 Corinthians 8:9).

It reveals and shapes the heart

Jesus said, “where your treasure is, there will your heart be also” (Matthew 6:21). How we use money shows what we value – and giving can train our hearts to value God’s kingdom above possessions.

Tithes and Offerings in the Bible

The tithe

A tithe means a tenth. Abraham gave a tenth to Melchizedek (Genesis 14:20), and the law of Moses instructed Israel to bring tithes to support worship and the Levites (Leviticus 27:30; Numbers 18:21). Malachi 3:10 calls God’s people to “bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse”. Many churches, including full gospel churches, teach tithing as a biblical pattern of faithful giving to the local church.

Offerings

Offerings are gifts given beyond the tithe – for special needs, projects, missions or simply as an expression of thanksgiving. In Exodus 35 the people brought so much for building the tabernacle that Moses had to ask them to stop!

Giving to the poor

Scripture repeatedly calls God’s people to care for the poor, widows, orphans and strangers. “He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD” (Proverbs 19:17). The early church shared generously so that there was no one in need among them (Acts 4:34).

The Attitudes God Values

Cheerful, not reluctant

“Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7). God is not impressed by giving under pressure. He delights in a willing heart.

Sincere, not for show

Jesus warned against giving to be seen by others (Matthew 6:1–4). Worship is directed to God, not to an audience.

Sacrificial, not measured by size

Jesus praised a poor widow who put two small coins into the temple treasury, saying she had given more than all the others because she gave out of her poverty (Mark 12:41–44). God measures a gift by the heart and the sacrifice behind it, not by the amount.

Faithful and planned

Paul told believers to set something aside regularly, “upon the first day of the week” (1 Corinthians 16:2). Planned giving reflects faithfulness rather than impulse.

What Giving Accomplishes

• Supports worship and ministry. Giving helps a church pay for its meeting place, support its pastors and run ministries for children, youth, families and the community.
• Spreads the gospel. Outreach, media and missions all rely on generous believers. VBCI’s mission is “to convert people within our community in all creative ways”.
• Meets real needs. Generosity can feed the hungry, comfort the grieving and help families in crisis.
• Grows the giver. Giving loosens the grip of materialism and deepens trust in God’s provision.

What About Blessing?

The Bible does speak of God’s blessing on generous people: “Give, and it shall be given unto you” (Luke 6:38), and “he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully” (2 Corinthians 9:6). But Paul immediately explains the purpose: God makes us rich “to all bountifulness” (2 Corinthians 9:11) – so that we can keep being generous. Blessing is not a reward to be bargained for; it is God’s faithfulness to supply what we need to do His will. Give because you love God, and trust Him with the outcome.

Practical Steps to Grow in Generosity

1. Pray about your giving. Ask God what He wants you to give, and give with faith.
2. Give first, not last. Set aside your giving when you receive income, rather than waiting to see what is left.
3. Make a budget. Wise planning makes generosity sustainable and avoids debt.
4. Start where you are. If a tithe feels impossible today, begin with a consistent percentage and grow from there.
5. Give more than money. Time, skills and hospitality are also gifts. Serving in a ministry is a form of giving too.
6. Keep it between you and God. Avoid comparing your giving with others.

A Note for Guests and New Believers

If you are visiting a church for the first time, you are welcome to take part in the offering, but you should never feel pressured to give. Generosity is a fruit of faith that grows over time.
